PROGRAM
Ron Lichtle introduced today’s speaker, fellow Rotarian and Rochester Chief of Police Steve Schettenhelm.  Steve served in the Birmingham Police Department for 25 years before becoming the Chief of Police for the City of Rochester 11 years ago.  He shared that the Rochester Police Department was organized in 1924, and the first patrol car was introduced in 1935.  Currently there are 22 sworn officers, including 6 command staff, and 16 officers.   The budget for the Police Department is $4.1 million.  He stated that Rochester is one of the top ten safest communities, and that is due to the police and community working together.  The top three policing issues in the community are:  traffic-related, fraud/identity theft, and alcohol/narcotics abuse.  Within the police department, there is a strong commitment to  community policing with the goal to be problem solvers.  Officers are engaged in foot patrols, Operation Medicine Cabinet, School tours and lockdown drills, evidence technicians, accident investigators, traffic enforcement, and special events planning.  Officers also conduct annual liquor license inspection programs.
There is a great partnership with the surrounding law enforcement agencies, especially in regards to similar training for active shooters and other threats.  The Rochester Police are part of MCAT, the Major Case Assistance Team, and  OakTAC, active shooter and civil unrest training.
Steve also talked about the Citizens Police Academy and the Paw Patrol which are great programs that connect policing to the local community.  He also shared about K-9 Kitt and Officer Knight.  Kitt is trained in narcotics detection, tracking, article searches, and handler protection.  There is also a second K-9, Pearl, who is trained in explosive detection.  Pearl joined the police department through a special arrangement with Leader Dogs.
Before taking questions, Steve concluded by talking about how the department is a full service police agency, including a color guard for special events and animal control within the city.
Thank you, Chief of Police Steve Schettenhelm, for a great presentation and for your great work in our community!
