Chief Steve Schettenhelm and Mayor Bryan Barnett spoke to the group regarding the Rochester area's response to recent protests and civil unrest following the death of George Floyd. Chief spoke about the hiring process in Rochester, how screening starts at the beginning (this is stressed, as halting problems before they happen is key). And then, the training itself guides the officer through the standards and processes in place. Mayor Barnett then discussed how our local cities are focused on public safety. Rochester Hills is the safest city in Michigan for the fourth year in a row (cities greater than 50,000 people). Nationally, the conference of mayors has been busy, discussing daily preparations to work with the protests happening in each of the cities within the conference. Bryan finished his presentation by talking about a movie, The Hate You Give, and the story embedded within it. Thank you so much for your presentation Steve and Bryan, great information, and good start.

Yes, this is a challenging time. But, we are Rotarians, we will rise to the challenge, and our resilience and power of adaptation will prevail over this. Thanks everyone, have a great week.
