PROGRAM
Ron Lichtle introduced today's speaker, Laura Richardson, CEO, of OHorizons.

"OHorizons Foundation is an international non-profit founded with the belief that some of the world’s most difficult challenges need simple solutions.

OHorizons seeks to address tough, global issues with innovative low-tech solutions that are scalable, sustainable, and implemented at the local level. We’re empowering communities with the tools and knowledge to solve their toughest problems so they can survive and thrive. As we've studied the cycle of hunger, we've developed a system for ending it by introducing solutions that address key human needs: access to clean drinking water, clean, renewable, affordable energy, improved agricultural practices, and economic development opportunities. " (from their website)

She spoke about the work of OHorizons and the goal of providing scalable breakthroughs to improve and sustain the quality of life for persons in impoverished areas.  In particular, she discussed their work in Bangladesh in the use and production of biosand filters.  Using local materials, they are able to create a sustainable system of building and training so that the know how is local.  Accessible clean water is the building block for global health.  Their goal is to be in the places where no one else is going to help the people that no one else is helping.  Over 50,000 biosand filters have been built thus far.  They are also doing work with solar energy for indoor lighting and have been in Puerto Rico helping those ravaged by Hurricane Maria.  All along the goal is to make a good solution better and to make that solution more accessible to more people.  They partner with NGOs where they are available, but also offer open source support, so that people may download their materials from their website.

Thank you, Laura, for your great presentation!

President Rodney closed the meeting at 1:28 p.m.  See you next week!
