We missed you if you couldn't join us on October 22nd. Jane Quigley, our "Garden Angel," was a guest of Dr. Bill Ebinger.
INVOCATION
Vince Mattina gave today’s invocation.
FIFTEENTH HANDSHAKE
Juliane Morian was the greeter this week and declared that Shirley Gofrak was the lucky recipient of this week's fifteenth handshake.
ROTARIAN OF THE WEEK
After sequestering the famed trophy for two weeks, Ron DiLiddo recognized Tom Neveau as the "rock" of our Rotary Club.
BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES
This week, we celebrated three special birthdays! Our club has three married couples: the DelPups, the Deels, and the Eastmans. What makes the Eastmans stand out is that in addition to sharing a wedding anniversary, they share a birthday on October 23rd. Timo Nicholaou will celebrate his birthday two days later on October 26th, and David Walker will have his birthday on October 27th.
HAPPY BUCKS
Shirley Gofrank had a happy/sad buck as she is packing up her bags and going back to Florida for the winter. While in Florida, Shirley is an active Naples Bay Rotary Club member/guest.
David Archbold was happy to fork over a happy buck in recognition of the Lion's win last weekend.
Jay Eastman happily contributed a "happy buck" in appreciation of David Archbold's thorough explanation about the badge box. David has organized the buttons into the new box and encourages members to return their badges to the correct alphabetical slot.
Kyle Johnson is getting an early holiday start by recruiting Salvation Army bell ringers on November 25th. If you're interested in volunteering, please contact Kyle at johns2kw@cmich.edu. In other holiday news, a "lagniappe" – a small gift traditionally given to customers by merchants – marks the start of the holiday season in Rochester. This special event coincides with the lighting of the Big Bright Lights downtown!
CLUB ANNOUNCEMENTS
We are sorry to report that Mayor Bryan Barnett's mother passed away recently after a battle with cancer. A sympathy card will be circulated at our next meeting.
On a motion by Ernie Schaefer, which Jay Eastman seconded, the Club approved the proposed Bylaws revision, eliminating the position of Assistant Secretary.
At the last Club Board meeting, David Archbold stepped down from the Club Secretary position and assumed the role of a Director. He will mainly focus on reporting our Youth Service Committee issues to the board. The Board is close to finalizing a club survey, which will be sent out to all members in the coming weeks. The Board is also working with Breona (Bree) Clawson to expand our social media presence to Instagram and LinkedIn.
President-Elect Rachel Aviles reminded all club members that we are having a social hour on Thursday, October 23, at the Rochester Mills Beer Company from 6 to 8. The Club will pay for appetizers; members can purchase drinks from the bar.
Linda Eastman is looking for volunteers for the Shred Polio event at Bordine’s on October 28th, from 9 a.m. to noon. Posters are available to help promote this recycling event.
Celebrity Chef Event Raises $700 for Rochester Rotary Charities.
On October 15th, we had the pleasure of featuring our very own Frank Rewold as the Celebrity Chef for the evening. Frank showcased his culinary skills by preparing a (one) delicious pizza, much to the crowd's delight. His efforts and the generous support of everyone who attended helped raise $700 for Rochester Rotary Charities. It was a fun-filled evening that reflected the Rotary spirit, and we look forward to more events like this in the future. Thank you to everyone who participated and made this event a success!
It's that time of year again—time to fix bicycles! Last year, we were joined by Bob Barnes, Executive Director of the Free Bikes 4 Kidz (https://fb4kdetroit.org/) program in Detroit, who shared the incredible impact this initiative has on the local community. Once again, Bob has invited us to lend a hand, and this year, we have two opportunities to get involved! Our next workday is Saturday, November 30th (the weekend after Thanksgiving.
We’ll head to the Free Bikes 4 Kidz warehouse on Hubbard Street in Detroit, starting at 10 a.m. and finishing around 1-2 p.m. If you'd like to join, please get in touch with Tim Duncan (duncan@oaklandanimal.com), and he’ll add you to the sign-up list. We'll be carpooling on October 19th. Let him know if you're interested!
The Rochester Rotary and the Mount Clemens Rotary clubs have been approved by the Congressional Office for International Leadership (COIL) to host an Open World Program on Public Library Development delegation from Kazakhstan. The five delegates and one facilitator will arrive on February 21st and leave on March 1st. We are seeking six people to host one of the delegates in their homes. In essence, your home would be a B&B. You would provide a private bedroom and access to a bathroom for one delegate. The host would be responsible for providing breakfast. The planning committee would take the people during the day and return them to the housing host after dinner each day. Please contact Christine (hage.christine@gmail.com) for details on whether you can help with this project.
SONG LEADER
Bob Lytle played with the theme of today's speaker, focusing on Downtown Rochester. We started with his song, The Meeting Song, with his lyrics. Bill Ebinger and Bob Lytle penned the second song, Rotary Gateway Park.
SHERIFF'S REPORT
Even though we didn't have a sheriff, we collected $85 toward our scholarship program.
SPEAKER
Kristi Trevarrow serves as the Executive Director of the Rochester Downtown Development Authority (DDA). With over 25 years of experience in downtown development and destination marketing, she has led Rochester to be recognized as a Great American Main Street award-winning community. Her responsibilities include business recruitment and retention, marketing, site development, community relations, fundraising, and overseeing the acclaimed Big Bright Light Show, which annually draws over one million visitors to Downtown Rochester.
Market + The Graham is the DDA's most ambitious project in the past 40 years. For over 25 years, the farmers market has been a vibrant community hub, drawing 2,000 visitors on each market day. With the acquisition of the former Oakland Animal Hospital, the DDA now has the opportunity to expand and improve the market. The enhanced facility is scheduled to open in the summer of 2025.
The new facility, named The Graham, honors Rochester's founding family, which began farming in the area in 1817. The Graham reflects the city’s agricultural heritage while embracing a modern vision by offering fresh food and hosting DDA-sponsored events. The space will serve as a free parking area when not in use for DDA events.
The new facility will feature public restrooms, shaded areas, a performance stage, DDA storage, an indoor event space, rotating artifact exhibits, and overhead Tivoli lighting.
