Rochester Rotary Club RotoScoop October 30, 2018

The meeting was opened by Wayne Hodges who led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, the 4-way test, and then we all sang "This is My Country."  The invocation was given by Janet Drobnich.  Wayne raised a special prayer concern for President Rodney's brother, Randy, who has significant health issues and lives in New York.  59 out of 108 members and 2 guests were present for today's meeting.  Paula D'Ambrosio played some great Halloween favorites on piano during our lunch to add to the festivities.

15th HANDSHAKE
Rotoscoop regrets that the name of the overjoyed Rotarian who was this week's 15th handshake was not written down.  No doubt a fine will be forthcoming.  (Trust me, it was someone really cool!)

ROTARIAN OF THE WEEK

Dave Blair handed the much sought after bejeweled trophy to Vito for all his support for our veterans, especially wounded veterans.  Congratulations, Vito!

SHERIFF
Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett was our sheriff today and offered wisdom and humor as he collected many fines in the areas of poinsettia sales at favorite places, the 2014 Detroit Tigers winning the 2018 World Series, John Gaber's knowledge of the Pistons, the upcoming election, and Rotarian Halloween costumes...  $262 in fines was collected for Rotary Scholarships, bringing the YTD total to at least $3,712 toward our $11,000 goal.  PLEASE NOTE: fines are now $5.  Thank you everyone!

PROGRAM
Ron Lichtle introduced today's speaker and fellow Rochester Rotarian, Roger Roller, who gave a presentation on his time in the Peace Corps.  Roger received his letter of acceptance in 1965 and did his training in teaching English as a second language at the University of Utah before departing for Ethiopia for two years.    Ethiopia has 80 languages, of which 64 are spoken.  He spent his time in Keren, at the time in northern Ethiopia (now part of Eritrea).  Roger was 22 years old when he began his Peace Corps experience.  The region where he lived is quite mountainous.  He spoke of the relationships he built with the people there, including his translator, Ibrahim.  In his group, 104 went over to Ethiopia, and 68 completed their two years of service.  He shared stories about the community, students he taught, and the friendships that occurred.  Roger concluded his presentation by reading a Thanksgiving letter that he sent home in 1965.  Thank you, Roger for a great presentation!

President Rodney closed the meeting at 1:35 p.m.
